Special Interest, Eraser

Brought together by New Orleans’ inventive DIY scene, Special Interest operate as a collective unit. Their sound is ever-fluid and continues to evolve. Special Interest began in 2016 as a duo with Alli Logout and Maria Elena on guitar, drum machine, and power drill, before Ruth Mascelli (electronics) and Nathan Cassiani (bass) filled out the line-up. Since then the band has grown a cult following and is notorious for its high-intensity live performances. Pitchfork awarded both their 2020 album The Passion Of and their 2022 album Endure the highly coveted Best New Music designation. Endure featured on numerous 2022 End of Year lists including Pitchfork, NPR Music and the New York Times. Dance music and punk culture have flirted in the warehouse before, but Special Interest’s desire to dismantle genre is informed by a larger abolitionist worldview that resists constraint, category, and conformity. Their music is a soundtrack to dancing the pain away as much as raging against injustice. June 15 Nikki Lopez 304 South St, Philadelphia PA $24+

Brisk emo vibes with rich veins of math rock. Think tremendous late ‘90s techniques with early ‘10s moods and the band’s heart firmly on its sleeves. They sing about vintage emo themes like love, loss, and growing up but much more self-awareness than their ancestors. Instead of wallowing in woe-is-me self-pity, Bottom Bracket prefers deep introspection and emotional honesty as they seek out a path forward. June 23 Nikki Lopez 304 South St, Philadelphia PA $12-15+

Buñuel, Murderous Again, Today is the Day, Spiritual Poison

Turbulent-noise rock. BUÑUEL’s amalgam of angular rhythms, drum salvos, blitzkrieging guitars and vocals that sound more like threats than promises is post-punk, proto heavy and arty up the ass. Arty as in avant-garde noise. Murderous Again – combines the dynamic spoken word of Lydia Lunch with the psycho-ambient jazz noir of Tim Dahl to create a provocative atmosphere of hypnotic musical poetry.
